Initial situation
The turbines in hydroelectric power plants are permanently exposed to water, currents and foreign bodies. A service life of over ten years requires reliable corrosion protection for components in contact with water. At the same time, it had to be possible to apply the coating on site in individual sections so as not to impair the ongoing operating processes.
The challenge
The particular stresses placed on the turbines required a coating system that not only effectively prevents corrosion, but is also extremely mechanically resilient and adheres securely to different substrates. The system also had to be designed in such a way that maintenance work could be carried out in sections during ongoing operation.
The Bergolin solution
RWE has been relying on Bergolin systems for over a decade. By combining a high-performance primer with a low-solvent epoxy coating, a tailor-made system has been established that is optimally adapted to the conditions in hydroelectric power plants. It reliably protects sensitive surfaces, even when working in sections, and ensures excellent adhesion and high resistance to mechanical loads.
One product, just two work steps
- Primer - protects sensitive surfaces immediately and reliably, even when working in sections.
- Epoxy coating - with a dry film thickness of 400-500 µm, it ensures exceptional corrosion resistance and a long service life for the turbines.
Result
The Bergolin system guarantees corrosion protection for over ten years. RWE benefits from reduced maintenance cycles, increased operational reliability and a significantly longer service life for the turbine systems on the Moselle. At the same time, the simple and safe application enables efficient work processes and predictable downtimes.
