Success Story

Less VOC, higher corrosion protection

ThyssenKrupp Bilstein GmbH

ThyssenKrupp Bilstein GmbH, headquartered in Ennepetal, Germany, is a globally operating company in the field of chassis technology. Its core competencies include the development and production of a wide range of shock absorber models. Its customers include almost all leading auto manufacturers.

Increased requirements for corrosion protection

For corrosion protection of the shock absorbers, Bergolin used a coating system in which the substrate was first pretreated with a phosphate coating and then painted with a 2K epoxy resin coating. This system survived up to 6 cycles of the VDA change test without losing corrosion protection. However, due to changes in the specifications of the automobile manufacturers, the coating was to withstand 10 cycles of the VDA change test in the future and, in addition, the solvent content was to be further reduced.

At the same time, a new plant was to be commissioned that would exceed the production volume of the two old plants.

For the development, this meant that the coating should not only meet higher corrosion and environmental protection requirements, but at the same time be suitable for a universal application method, so that the coating can be used both on the old plants with manual and bell application and on the new plant with electrostatic and robot application.

Rapid response leads to increasing demand

With the aid of intensive research, Bergolin further developed the formulation in the ongoing process at ThyssenKrupp Bilstein GmbH, worked on the flexibility of the coating and, by adding special pigments, ensured that the specifications of the automotive manufacturers were met in every respect. By converting to an aqueous system, it was also possible to significantly reduce the use of solvents.

By responding quickly to the specifications of the auto manufacturers, ThyssenKrupp Bilstein GmbH was able to claim additional capacity for itself and has since benefited from a steadily growing volume of orders.

The impeccable cooperation between Bergolin, the customer, the plant manufacturer and the pretreatment service provider meant that nothing stood in the way of a fast and uncomplicated commissioning of the new plant, enabling ThyssenKrupp Bilstein GmbH to further increase the quality of its products and further reduce its production times thanks to the more efficient processes.
